The MSBL and MABL provide adults the opportunity to play organized baseball. This is actually defined in the League Preamble, as follows:
The Men's Senior Baseball League, Inc. and the Men's Adult Baseball League (the national organizations) and its affiliated local leagues are operated for the purpose of providing adults the opportunity to play organized amateur baseball. It is the policy of the League and its affiliates to maintain the highest standard of ethics in conducting their activities. It is the responsibility of the officers and directors of each affiliated local league to maintain this standard, and to enforce it by taking appropriate disciplinary action in cases in which the standard is abused.
In simpler terms, it's a great way to play baseball again. At times it may seem expensive, but smack a double to the gap, go yard, get a steal, strike someone out looking, or make a great play on defense and you'll be hooked. Guaranteed.
The MABL is for players over 18 years of age. The Warthogs played in the MABL for two years before joining the Continental Division of the MSBL. The competition is great and there are good players on every team. The MSBL, on the other hand, is for players over 30 years of age (you'll understand the reasons behind the MSBL when you reach 30, if you haven't already). The Continental Division wasn't quite as competitive as the MABL although some of the players and teams were very good. The Continental Division is probably most appropriate for players or teams with less experience in organized baseball. The Hogs won the division in 1998 and plan to move up to either the International Division of the MSBL or the Open Division. Generally, teams in the International Division appear to be deeper with more players that have either collegiate or professional experience. After watching some of the games, however, we do feel that we would be competitive. The Open Division is a collection of some of the better teams from the MABL and MSBL International Division. They play each other and some of the better teams in the other leagues to ensure competitive games.
If you are interested in playing amateur baseball in Southern California, visit the SoCal MSBL/MABL home page. If you are outside of the SoCal area, visit the MSBL home page to find a team near you. If you're over 30 and can pitch or have some good experience (and live in Southern California) and want to play with a good bunch of guys, skip the MSBL and contact the Warthogs directly.
