Warthogs Succumb to A's in Double-Header
Week four brought the first double-header of the season for the Warthogs. The Hogs lost both to the OC A's losing 13-3 and 3-2. In the first game, the A's hit the ball well but over half of their runs were unearned. The Hogs scored 3 runs in the first inning and then were blanked the rest of the way. Matt threw 7 solid innings and Fred had 2 RBIs. In the second game, our defense picked up and Steve threw a great game, but our offense was missing again. You'd think after missing the morning the offense would show up for the afternoon, but it ended up taking the whole day off. Again the Hogs scored early, 2 runs in the first from hits from Steve, Fred, Alan, and Kyle, but we just couldn't string our hits together to make them count throughout the rest of the game and ended up getting blanked the rest of the way. We have to hand it to the A's, though. They're a class team that hit the ball hard and made plays when it counted.
The Hogs next game is against the Open Division Blue Jays, the winners of the MSBL International Division World Series last year.
Warthogs 1999 Season Gets Underway
The Warthogs started the season by playing 4 innings in the rain against the Dodgers. Luckily nobody was injured in the poor conditions. The game was suspended when a lake formed on the pitcher's mound with the Dodgers ahead 8-4 and will be completed on July 11 at Marina HS.
The Hogs then played the Indians South in an afternoon game the second week. Although it was sunny and hot, the Hogs played like it was still raining and lost the game 24-15. Although the Indians South hit the ball well, the Hogs contributed with several timely errors and poor hitting with runners in scoring position. This is the fourth time the Hogs have played the Indians South and none of the games have been close (the Indians moved up from the Continental Division this year, as well) with the Hogs winning 2 of 3 last season.
In week three, the Warthogs defeated the Dodgers 9-2 behind some good pitching, great fielding, and some clutch hitting (see spotlight). It just took a few weeks for the Hogs to work the rust off. As an aside, the Hogs have tentatively scheduled spring training for 2000 to begin before the first game of the season.
